Dominique Laveau: Voodoo Child – “Requiem” (Vertigo)

DLVoodooChild-TPBWriter: Selwyn Seyfu Hinds | Artist: Denys Cowan | Inks: Jon Floyd & Don Hudson | Colours: Dave McCaig

Ruling over the most haunted city in America are the powerful Voodoo Queens – but the Queen has been murdered, and Tulane grad student Dominique Laveau is the No. 1 suspect – and marked for death.

One of Vertigo’s new titles from past September, Dominique Laveau is a tale of voodoo, family and blood-ties and -feuds in New Orleans. This is one of the most atmospheric comics I’ve read, and I was hooked by the first issue. I decided to wait, for financial reasons, for the collection. Sadly, I was ultimately disappointed by the book – what had started out as a gripping, gothic supernatural tale, ended up a bit of a muddle.

Recent Acquisitions (November/December)

201212-NewBooks

A pre-Christmas selection of books that I’ve received or purchased over the last few weeks. A very nice selection, all told – only one book probably won’t be reviewed, and that’s because it’s the fifth book in a series I’ve never read. [See below – I’m offering it to a US/Canadian in return for a guest review.]

Comics Round-Up (Apr.18) the 2nd

ComicsRoundUp-20120418-03

Some big things happening in this collection of comics – we have the next salvo in the battle between the Avengers and the X-Men over the fate of Hope and the Phoenix Force; two introductions to the Night of the Owls Batman event; some voodoo shenanigans in New Orleans; the beginning of an adaptation of a mega-selling crime thriller; a continuing epic space opera; UFOs and American politics; and a broken mutant. All-in-all, an excellent week.

Sadly, with my new strict budget, I wasn’t able to get the other exciting issues released this week – specifically, Justice League #8, Catwoman #8, Red Hood & The Outlaws #8, Defenders #5, Dawn of the Jedi #3, No Place Like Home #3, Secret #1 and Manhattan Projects #2. Maybe in the future, during a quieter week.

Comics Round-Up (Mar.21) the Second

ComicsRoundUp-20120321-02-01

This is a very good week for comics – not only did I really like a couple of the new IDW issues (particularly Smoke & Mirrors), but the crop of DC titles is stellar, as were the others I picked up. Two debut issues, five seventh innings, two second outings, and a final chapter.

There’s one other comic that I picked up this week, but have not included here, and that’s Freedom #1 – it’s a bumper issue (more a graphic-novelette, really) and so I’m going to give it a separate, more in-depth review of its own.

In the meantime, here are mini-reviews of ten pretty great comics.

Upcoming: March 2012 Previews from Vertigo

DCVertigo-2012PreviewSamplerIf you’ve been in a comic store this past week, you may have either seen or received a new preview sampler issue that includes tastes of four new titles coming from Vertigo next month.

All four titles sound pretty cool, so I thought I’d just share some information on the blog to help generate some interest. I’m quite familiar with two of the series’ writers already, aware of a third, and one of them is an entirely new name to me.

So, read on for some information and quick thoughts on Dominique Laveau: Voodoo Child, Fairest, New Deadwardians and Saucer Country.
