Comics Round-Up (May 30)

ComicsRoundUp-20120530-1

A few catch-ups and one really early review of a new series by one of my favourite comics’ writers. This was another pretty busy week, so while I tried to get as many of the comics reviewed as I could, some nevertheless had to be culled from the list. Some of these I was sent for review, so they will be read and reviewed at a later date. I just wanted to get the reviews of these issues up ASAP.

This is also one of the last weeks I’ll be reviewing individual DC issues for a while (I may do a couple more next week), as I’m heading back to the UK mid-June. I’m still working on coming back to the US if possible – Alyssa’s here for another four years, so my desperate quest for employment in or around New York continues! I’m almost at the point of begging, but that would be rather unseemly and undignified.

[*cough* … Please help … *cough*]

Comics: “Night of the Owls” & “Avengers vs. X-Men”

ComicsRoundUp-20120516-2

Here’s a quick, extra comics round-up for four issues I managed to catch up on recently. As you can gather from the title, it focuses on two on-going story “events”, one from DC and one from Marvel. I have very different feelings for the two of them.

Comics Round-Up (Apr.18) the 2nd

ComicsRoundUp-20120418-03

Some big things happening in this collection of comics – we have the next salvo in the battle between the Avengers and the X-Men over the fate of Hope and the Phoenix Force; two introductions to the Night of the Owls Batman event; some voodoo shenanigans in New Orleans; the beginning of an adaptation of a mega-selling crime thriller; a continuing epic space opera; UFOs and American politics; and a broken mutant. All-in-all, an excellent week.

Sadly, with my new strict budget, I wasn’t able to get the other exciting issues released this week – specifically, Justice League #8, Catwoman #8, Red Hood & The Outlaws #8, Defenders #5, Dawn of the Jedi #3, No Place Like Home #3, Secret #1 and Manhattan Projects #2. Maybe in the future, during a quieter week.

Comics Round-Up (Apr.4) the 2nd

ComicsRoundUp-20120401-02-01

This was going to be a short-and-sweet second round-up, but it turned out I had a fair bit to write about a couple of these issues. It’s a pleasantly varied selection in this post: the world’s greatest super-hero accepts his destiny; things finally kick off between the Avengers and the X-Men; young super-hero sidekicks find themselves as Earth’s last line of defence; fear runs through Gotham; and the zany super-science-heroes finally come to the end of their story!

Preview: “AVX: VS #1” (Marvel)

To go alongside Marvel’s upcoming mega-event, Avengers vs. X-Men, the publisher will be releasing an “explosive, high-octane action packed tie-in”, simply called “AVX: VS”. A six-issue mini-series, it features “cover to cover battles” that won’t appear in Marvel’s other title. The mini-series will be handled by the creative teams of Jason Aaron & Adam Kubert and Kathryn & Stuart Immonen. I’m not really sure which series I’ll be reading in this big event – having not read many of the titles that will feature Avengers vs. X-Men content and story, I worry I may be a little lost… Ah well. Regardless, this looks like it could be a lot of fun.
