Q&A with Andy Serkis on adapting Samantha Shannon’s THE BONE SEASON & George Orwell’s ANIMAL FARM

AndySerkisIn a Q&A organised by Samantha Shannon’s publicists in the UK, Andy Serkis discussed the acquisition of movie rights for Shannon’s debut novel, The Bone Season. Serkis, best-known perhaps as Gollum in Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies, has set up his own film studio, Imaginarium Studio. The Bone Season will be one of their first projects, alongside an adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, both of which will be directed by Serkis.

***

What is it about The Bone Season that compelled you to include it in The Imaginarium Studio’s very first slate of films?

We first came across the manuscript at the London Book Fair and immediately fell in love with the scope, the scale and the exceptional detail of the world Samantha had created. It’s a really compelling story with such a great central character – we all immediately saw its potential as a fantastic feature film.

Star Wars in Rolling Stone

RS-198007-SlavesOfTheEmpireWhile perusing Rolling Stone’s website (something I do frequently), I spotted a link for “Star Wars in Rolling Stone”. It’s a collection of the articles from the magazine, beginning with an interview with George Lucas from 1977. They’re presented in reverse-chronology, so I’d start with the final page (linked above) and work from there.

One article in particular jumped out for me – partly because of the title – and that was from the June 12th, 1980 issue of the magazine (pictured): “Slaves to the Empire: The 'Star Wars' Kids Talk Back”, by Timothy White. The article is about (according to the standfirst):

“Five actors caught in the paradox of ‘Star Wars’ (the highest-grossing film of all time has done nothing for their careers) talk about their trap, the making of ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and why they still want to be a part of the third installment”

It’s an interesting interview, more about their opinions about the movies, working on them, and where they came from, than about being “trapped” by the films’ success. It’s filled with some great trivia for die-hard Star Wars fans. For example: Carrie Fisher is quite mischievous, and suggests that Leia should have fallen for Chewbacca; Mark Hamill considered Luke to be the “classic thankless role”, confesses that he is a “serious collector” of Star Wars memorabilia, and amusingly bemoans the fact that the Luke dolls have been marked down in price for collectors; Anthony Daniels (C-3PO) explains why the first movie was a “miasma of pain”; Harrison Ford sheepishly admits that he’s “never been much of a film fan” but felt like Empire Strikes Back was "the first time I’ve ever seen anything I’ve done that I’m happy with".

The piece also addresses Mark Hamill’s car accident, and is actually the first time I’ve read anything about it:

“Hamill's anxiety about landing choice roles was tragically accelerated when his BMW ran off the freeway in 1977. Star Wars had not yet been released, and his face was sufficiently ravaged that he wondered whether he would be able to retain any part of his angular good looks, let alone fulfill the remainder of his three-picture deal with Lucas. That mental anguish was only intensified when the film proved to be an international smash.”

Reading these articles got me to thinking: has anyone written a book about the making of the movies? Not just big, photo-stuffed Coffee Table books (although, those are really nice, too), but a campaign-biography-style volume about the making of the original movies. I’d definitely read one of those.

Make Your Own Superman “S”/Glyph…!

So. This is utterly silly, but also really cool. I’m a massive Superman fan (the Christopher Reeves videos must have been worn out in our house, when I was a kid). With the upcoming Man of Steel re-boot, Warner Bros. have put up a rather nifty, totally geeky app: the Glyph Generator! Make your own “S”! Here’s mine…

There’s also the option to add your glyph to a photo. I totally would have done this, if there were any decent pictures of me in an appropriate pose. Thankfully for the world, there wasn’t…

Trailer: THE WOLVERINE

I am sooo looking forward to this movie. Love the character, love the way Hugh Jackman portrays him, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the movies. Roll on July!

Upcoming: MAN OF STEEL

I am a huge fan of Superman. Not Grant Morrison’s Action Comics or All-Star Superman. The Christopher Reeve movies, though, were a large part of my childhood (I watched them multiple times). I also really liked Mark Waid’s Birthright, J. Michael Straczynski’s Superman: Earth One (very happy there’s a new volume coming out very soon), and I’ve really enjoyed the New 52 Superman issues I’ve read (#1-9).

A lot of people didn’t like Superman Returns – I did, despite the fact that Lex Luthor was, effectively, attempting an evil real estate deal. With Man of Steel, the long-in-production next Superman movie, though, I think things may turn around for DC’s cinematic output (Marvel have totally dominated Super Hero Hollywood).

A new poster was unveiled at ComicCon:

ManOfSteel-ComicCon

Writer: David S. Goyer.

Stars: Henry Cavill (Clark Kent/Superman), Russell Crowe (Jor-El), Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Michael Shannon (General Zod), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White)

The movie is released in June 2013.

James Bond: SKYFALL Teaser

I seem to have missed all other news about this movie, but I’m rather glad they’re doing another Daniel Craig James Bond movie. The teaser trailer was just released, and it definitely whet my appetite:

Here’s the synopsis for the movie:

“Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.”

A strong cast once again, with Judi Dench, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Javier Bardem (among others) joining Daniel Craig in the top slots.

New “PROMETHEUS” Trailer

Still don’t know too much about the movie, but if this trailer doesn’t whet your appetite, I don’t know what will:

Written by Damon Lindelof and John Spaihts, Prometheus is directed by master-director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner and many other superb movies).

The movie also has a pretty awesome cast: Noomi Rapace (original Swedish versions of the Millennium Trilogy), Charlize Theron (many great things), Michael Fassbender (X-Men First Class, Inglorious Basterds, and many more), Guy Pearce (LA Confidential and many more), Idris Elba (TV’s Luthor), and Logan Marshall-Green (The O.C., 24, and more).

X-Men: First Class

Superhero Franchise gets a Re-Boot

XMen1stClass2

The X-Men have long been one of my favourite superhero franchises, and I loved the comics and cartoon when younger, and also the first three movies and Wolverine. This year, 20th Century Fox has decided to re-boot the series, starting at the very beginning.

X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events.
