Week in Review

This is the first of these I’ve done in a while, but there have been some pretty good articles cropping up around the internet, and I thought I would be remiss for not sharing them. I have, nevertheless, still missed plenty. Hopefully this series of posts will be back to normal from next week.

This Week: A flurry of K.J. Parker reviews and mini-interviews; Kameron Hurley discusses her first novel; Jon Sprunk is interviewed; Pornokitsch take a look at 50 Shades of Grey vs. fantasy hatred;

K.J. Parker

A number of blogs have featured Parker’s latest novel, Sharps, and offered some mini-interviews as well. Check out Staffer’s Musings, Pornokitsch, and Bookworm Blues for their reviews with mini-interviews.

I haven’t managed to read Sharps just yet (although I do have a copy on my shelf). I think I’ll probably wait a little while, so it doesn’t get drowned out by the flurry of other reviews and interviews. I am intrigued by the premise, so I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to wait.

A Dribble of Ink: “Publishing isn’t a Meritocracy, it’s a Casino” by Kameron Hurley [Article/Guest Post]

This came out just over a week ago, actually, but because I missed it after a Virus Ate My Computer, I thought I’d share it here today. I thought it was an interesting post about an author’s experiences with her first novel and the strange, unpredictable way it got attention, notice and, eventually, some measure of success.

Hurley’s series is one I’ve been meaning to read for a long time – I have God’s War on my Kindle, waiting to be read, but for some reason I always tell myself I’m “saving it for later”. This is one of my annoying reading habits, something I’ll write about in a future post – I always seem to be saving things for later, even if I really want to read them. I have no idea why I do this…

Grasping For The Wind: A Chat with Jon Sprunk [Interview]

Rather self-explanatory, what this is…

*

Pornokitsch: “re: 50 Shades of Grey” [Commentary]

A shrewd, amusing look at the hatred that has been spawned by the success of BDSM phenom, 50 Shades of Grey.

Staffer’s Musings: Blogger-Publisher Relationship Response to a Response [Comment]

A good continuation of the discussion of how bloggers and publishers interact and, perhaps, should interact going forward.

Activity on Civilian Reader has picked up again this week. Three book reviews – Shift by Kim Curran, Angel of Fire by William King, and The Walking Dead: Rise of the Governor by Rob Kirkman and Joe Bonansinga (guest reviewed by Bane of Kings); some comic reviews – The Ultimates Vols.1&2, Before Watchmen first phase (guest reviewed by Shadowhawk), and I caught up on Boom Studios and Zenescope releases. Mark Charan Newton popped by for a catch-up chat, and Guy Adams wrote about his influences & inspirations.

  1. God's War and the sequel Infidel are some of the best things I've read this year, Kameron Hurley is definitely one to watch.
