I want to note that technologic...All good points!.<br /><br />I want to note that technological advance comes in flavors beyond the industrial revolution and electricity and guns. For example, the development of a plough that could cut into the denser river valley soils changed field and agricultural patterns in the late Early Middle Ages of Europe, and thus was a technological advance that (over time) had a huge impact on society. You don't see many "egads" anymore. :)<br />But yes, some tropes are tropes for a reason - they are comfortable, or handy (some might argue lazy) devices to situate a reader.
